About Tuned In Audio
Tim here, with a little story of how I gained my initial experience, a hint at my ripples as it were, and how I can assit in improving your aural and visual experiences.
Where has my journey gone so far?
Professionally my career in electronics spans many years, officially starting in a more military fashion with the first 9 years in the Royal Australian Navy, it was there where I undertook my initial training as an electronic systems technician, and during my period of service completed numerous advancement courses in engineering, asset and personnel management, and was a key memeber during development and implimentation of a new fleet wide maintenance system streamlining the way it is kept at peak operational performance. During my service the system I was specialty trained in was the AN/SPG 51c (digital upgrade), the missile guidance radar system on DDG's also known as guided missile destroyers, this system tracked targets with a pulsed doppler radar and via the same dish a second continuous wave beam of energy iluminated the target for the guided missiles to hone in on. Outside of the grusome reality of what that means, the benefit of being trained in a system such as this was its sheer diversity of skills required, with the complexity of maintaining 2 entire systems from the salt water cooling pump to the family fridge sized computers, high voltage power supplies to robotic antenna assemblies, the list goes on but the experience was priceless.
In the fleet putting skills to the test is where the story starts to head in an audible direction, being a mission critical system we were also responsible for the operation of the two radar systems during tracking operations. The doppler display which showed the target as a spike in the noise was accompanied by a soundtrack, the high pitch squeal of doppler portraying both strength of target return and speed, one of the key requirements was being able to audibly decipher between various high pitch squeals and variations in them to determine the type of aircraft by size, speed, number of engines and whether it was propeller or jet propelled, helicopters were easy. While trying to decipher the type of aircraft we were also monitoring for evasive manouvers, this would be rapid turns where in relation to the ship where the targets speed would drop drastically and reduce the effectivenes of the doppler radars capabilities, and while the computer did an impressive job maintaining tracking, the pilots were also well versed in avoidance techniques, which is where the focussed listening to the pitch of the squeal came into play. Watching the spike for movement which was accompanied by a drop in pitch that indicated a turn, watching the target dot bounce around the relative to dish display was our guide for override correction with a joystick if the pilots were clever enough to outsmart a computers ability to think impulsivly, and where critical listening and preemptive thinking reached new dimensions.
Change of life..
